ويطلق على هذه العادة المنتشرة في الملاعب اسم "غرغرة الكربوهيدرات"، وتستغرق ما يتراوح بين 5 إلى 10 ثوان، وهي بحسب دراسات علمية تعزز الأداء عند الرياضيين في الأنشطة المجهدة التي تزيد مدة ممارستها عن ساعة، مثل ركوب الدراجات والعدو الطويل.
ويسمى محلول الكربوهيدرات "إلكترولايتس"، وهو يفيد لاعبي الكرة في تجنب مشكلات الجهاز الهضميأيضا، لأن درجة جفافه تدفع المعدة إلى إفراز المزيد من العصارات لتخفيفها.
كذلك يساعد المحلول على الحفاظ على توازن السوائل بالجسم، ويبث فيه النشاط والحيوية.
ويفسر علماء تأثير السائل الإيجابي على الأداء بأن مستقبلات الكربوهيدرات في الفم تنشط مناطق معينة من الدماغ، والتي تعمل بدورها على تحسين الوظيفة الحركية لدى اللاعبين.
وحذر إخصائيون من خطورة "الغرغرة بالكربوهيدرات" في حال تجاوز مدة النشاط الرياضي للساعتين، نظرا لأن العضلات تصبح في حاجة لتناول عنصر الكربوهيدرات، ومنعها من ذلك يعرض الجسم للخطر.
