للمرة الثانية في شهر أكتوبر الجاري، سجلت أسوأ معدلات للتلوث منذ بداية عام 2019 في مدينة نيودلهي الهندية، حيث سجل مؤشر جودة الهواء مستوى "شديد السوء"، وسط ترجيحات بالمزيد من التدهور بعد عيد "ديوالي" الهندوسي.
ووفقا لبيانات السفارة الأميركية في الهند، فقد لامس مؤشر جودة الهواء الذي يقيس تركيز الجسيمات السامة في الجو، في نيودلهي، الجمعة، 388 وهو ما يتجاوز بكثير المستوى "الآمن" عند 60.
ويقيس المؤشر تركيز الجسيمات السامة الدقيقة التي يقل قطرها عن 2.5 ميكرون ويمكن أن تصل إلى الرئتين، مما قد يتسبب في أمراض مميتة منها السرطان وأمراض القلب.
وقد يكتنف نيودلهي والمدن المجاورة ضباب كثيف سام، إذا فشلت السلطات في السيطرة على الألعاب النارية المستخدمة في عيد ديوالي (عيد الأنوار) الذي يوافق الأحد.
وسمحت المحكمة العليا باستخدام "ألعاب نارية آمنة وصديقة للبيئة" فقط لمدة ساعتين بحد أقصى، وفي مناطق محددة مثل المتنزهات، بهدف تقليل الضرر على الصحة.
لكن السلطات فشلت في فرض هذا المرسوم، واستمر إشعال الألعاب النارية حتى وقت متأخر من الليل، ونتيجة لذلك ارتفع تركيز الجسيمات الدقيقة السامة في بعض أنحاء المدينة إلى 689 في اليوم التالي، مما ينذر بحالة طوارئ.
ولتجنب تكرار ما حدث في العام الماضي، ومحاولة ثني المواطنين عن إشعال عشرات الآلاف من الألعاب النارية، تقدم سلطات العاصمة الهندية للسكان عروضا بأضواء الليزر للاحتفال بعيد ديوالي في مطلع الأسبوع.
