أعلن عملاق السيارات الياباني « تويوتا’ عن خطته لبناء مصنع بطاريات بقيمة 1.29 مليار دولار أمريكي في مقاطعة راندولف بولاية كارولاينا الشمالية – الولايات المتحدة. وعند اكتمال المنشأة التي يتوقع الانتهاء من أعمال بنائها خلال عام 2025، ستحتوي على أربعة خطوط إنتاج، كل منها قادرٌ على إنتاج بطاريات لمائتي ألف مركبة سنويًا.
وتُخطّط تويوتا أيضًا إلى توسيع المصنع مستقبلًا ليكون قادرًا بنهاية المطاف على إنتاج 1.2 مليون بطارية للمركبات الكهربائية بشكلٍ سنوي. وتعتبر هذه المنشأة جزءً من استثمار أكبر بقيمة 3.4 مليار دولار أمريكي خصّصته شركة السيارات اليابانية لتوسيع قدرتها في إنتاج بطاريات السيارات بالولايات المتّحدة.
وذكرت الشركة أنها اختارت هذا الموقع لعدّة أسباب، أبرزها أنَّ هذا المكان يتمتع بسهولة الوصول إلى مصادر الطاقة المتجدّدة، إذ أكّد عملاق السيارات الياباني أنه ملزمٌ باستخدام طاقة نظيفة بنسبة 100٪ لإنتاج البطاريات في المصنع.
