حيث استطاع الفريق الياباني من جامعةِ طوكيو إكتشاف مادة تسمى « البوليمر ذاتيّ الشِّفاء » صدفةً أثناءَ دراستِهم لمواد لاصقة جديدة، إذ لاحظوا أثناءَ تجريبِ البوليمر واستخدامِهِ كغراء قدرتَهُ على الالتصاقِ مجدَّداً عند قطعِه، وذلكَ بمجرَّدِ الضغطِ عليهِ لمدَّةِ 30 ثانية بدرجةِ حرارةِ الغرفة (21 درجة مئوية أو ما يعادل 70 درجة فهرنهايت).
وما يميز مادة « البوليمر » ليسَ بنيته القويَّة المتماسكة كالزُّجاج فقط ، وإنَّما قدرتُه على الشِّفاءِ ذاتيَّاً في درجةِ حرارةِ الغُرفة أيضاً، إذ تتطلَّبُ المواد الأخرى درجات حرارة عالية لتترابط، إضافةً إلى الوقتِ الأطول بكثير مقارنةً بهذا النَّوع من البوليمر.
وتضيف الدراسة أن المادة الجديدة المكتشفة عطفا على أنها مهمة في تقويةِ الجسمِ الضَّعيف، وترميمِ شاشاتِ الأجهزة دونَ استبدالِها أو اللُّجوء إلى عمليَّاتِ الصِّيانة، كما أنَّها مادَّةٌ صديقةٌ للبيئة لستَ مضطرَّاً للتخلُّصِ منها بعدَ الكسر، فيمكن كذلك الاستفادة منها في المجالِ الطّبيّ، كتقويةِ العِظام وتقديمِ المُساعدة في هندسةِ الأنسجة.
