من أفريقيا إلى أميركا.. كيف تسافر الصحراء بين قارتين؟
أصيب باحثون بالحيرة إثر عثورهم في قلب منطقة الكاريبي، على جزيئات غبار من الصحراء الكبرى الواقعة وسط أفريقيا، بعد أن سافرت مسافة تقدر بنحو 3500 كيلومتر.
وبرزت عدة تساؤلات علمية حول الطريقة التي انتقلت بها هذه الجزيئات من قارة أفريقيا إلى منطقة الكاريبي بين قارتي أميركا الشمالية والجنوبية، لا سيما أن المنطقتين يفصلها المحيط الأطلنطي الشاسع، وفقما نقلت صحيفة "ديلي ميل" البريطانية.
ووجد الباحثون أن هذه الجزيئات التي تم العثور عليها بالكاريبي أكبر بخمسين مرة مقارنة بالجحم الذي يفترض أن تكون عليها هذه الأجسام المنقولة عن طريق الرياح.
وتبعا لهذا الاكتشاف "المثير"، يرى الباحثون أن ثمة ضرورة لإعادة النظر في النظريات المتعلقة بالمناخ وما يشهده من تفاعلات.
وأوضح الباحث في فيزياء الغلاف الجوي بجامعة ريدينغ البريطانية جيلس هاريسون، أن "الاعتقاد الذي ظل سائدا هو أن جزيئات الغبار الكبيرة لا تستطيع السفر لمسافات طويلة تقدر بآلاف الكيلومترات، فالمألوف هو أن تصعد هذه الجزيئات إلى الهواء قبل أن تحط على نوافذ البيوت والسيارات" في أماكن قريبة نسبيا.
ويعد هذا الاكتشاف مهما جدا من الناحية البحثية، لأن هذه الجزيئات لا تحظى بالاهتمام في البرامج الإلكترونية الحالية لرصد توقعات الطقس، ويتم تجاهلها اعتقادا بأنها غير موجودة.
ويعتقد الباحثون أن الأمطار تسقط نسبة من جزيئات الغبار التي ينتهي بها المطاف في المحيطات، أحيانا، فتنقل مكوناتها إلى المياه وتؤثر على السلسة الغذائية.
